Home of the Jayhawks, KU includes the main campus in Lawrence, a city of about 88,000 in northeastern Kansas; the Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas; the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; a clinical campus of the School of Medicine in Wichita; and educational and research facilities throughout the state.  Basketball was invented at KU, and is a very hot sport in Lawrence, not to mention Jayhawks football.  Academically, KU is no slouch either.   In the sciences, vitamins A and D were discovered, as well as how Helium can be extracted from gas, making it possible for such things as magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear reactors and ballistic missiles.   Forbes Magazine named only 10 as "IQ campuses" for trailblazing research, and KU was one.

Lawrence, itself, is ranked one of the top 15 "Best Small Art Towns In America" and is becoming an increasingly popular travel destination where visitors discover tree-lined streets overflowing with eateries, small shops and galleries. The jazz, classical, rock, hip-hop and sidewalk music scene is renowned.  Downtown Lawrence is pictureque and artsy, and beautiful Mount Oread gives splendid views of Kansas vistas.
